Thank you for such an informative and fun way to learn about Web 2.0 Tom.
It's been interesting to learn about Web 2.0 and how our society is becoming a community through social web interactions. It's great to be in the know. As you can see from my blog, I am a travel nut so those websites you shared at the end of the last lesson were great. Boo.com rocks!! Not sure why it was so entitled but it definitely is memorable!

Back to school web 2.0

Hello everyone.
It was good to be able to see what is out there for Web 2.0 opportunites for children and teens.
I really thought that the site Glubble was a really well put together site and I like the way it is private for kids and their families. Kid Tube was cool and it is so good that there is a kid-friendly alternative to You Tube. My favorite search engine for kids was Ask for Kids. It is visually pleasing and easy to manuver.

Hello all,
I am really excited that I have new search engines to use. I've been a Googlephile for a long time but these sites are pretty cool. I must admit for my fave for research is the amazing Hakia.com. Now I wish the name was a little better than this but I will save it to my favorites. They have 2 lists of results and my favorite is Credible sites which are sites "recommended by librarians to ensure quality and commercial free bias". Where have you been all my life Hakia...Google who?
I did notice with Lexxe.com that the results I came up with seemed more reputable than Google results. Quinura.com provides a word web on the side with similar words to your search term. Bing.com has different subheadings to look under.

Hello all,
When I read the new Learn 2.5 blog, I almost wept with joy. Tom was talking about my new love...the Ipod Touch 2G. I just purchased one a month ago and boy is it beautiful!! It is one the of the coolest devices I have ever had my hands on. The touch screen so wonderful , the picture quality..to die for!! I have watched a couple of tv shows on it and the screen is just the right size. I have also used our wonderful Wi-Fi connection. We should be proud of the strength of our system... Panera has nothing on us. I was watching You tube at Panera and it kept on stopping and starting, but OCLS wireless...smooth sailing. One thing that is a bit of an annoyance is that you have to enter in your card number and pin every time you use the system. Oh, well you can't have everything.
It is also so helpful that we have a mobile website. I also love how the Touch can be turned longways and the screen is landscape.
Sorry to sound like such an advertisement but it's Tom's fault.. :)

Social Networking sites..are they good for the library

I think Facebook and Twitter are so popular that we would be foolish not to use these sites to reach out to people about OCLS. I'm glad to see that we are. There are many fans of libraries and they would love to have the opportunity for people to know this through becoming a fan on Facebook or having some library flare on their page.
Twitter is great because library staff can tweet saying that in 2 hours they will be attending a free concert at main in Library Central. Then people could know about it and maybe drop by and see.

Learn 2.5

It's great to be back on my blog. Second Life, huh? I did attend a breakout session 2 years ago about Second Life. It's not for everyone, but I can see how it can be very interesting for people who enjoy virtual reality and doing things from there own home. It was a little unnerving to me that you don't know who you are really communicating with and the person's intentions can be questionable.
I think the avatars can be a little risque. If you were in a professional world you might want to be careful of that. Maybe I'm just a little uptight?
It's also a great way to learn by submersion and also meet with people with the same interests. It is also great to help people develop there creativity. Central Florida Memory is a perfect venue for Second Life.

Phishing and Malware - BOO...HISS!

Wow if this did not scare you, nothing will. Thank God I have not fallen for a phishing scam and there is no way to stop Maleware except pop-up blockers and firewalls. Good thing we have these here at the library and I have them at home. When I viewed the information on Phishing done by IS I have to admit that I was scammed. If I was able to place the mouse over the link to see the URL I'm sure I would have not been!

Life-long learning online

All I can say is wow! I had no clue that there were so many amazing websites out there that we can learn from. I know it could take a lifetime to learn everything available on these sites, and I know there are many more. It was hard for me to stop browsing through these interesting, informative and fun sites. My personal fave was Instructalbes.com. I wish I knew about this site sooner so I could have created cost effective and creative gifts for all my friends and family. I definitley will use the Berklee free music lessons, I've always wanted some vocal training. Expertvillage.com and 5min.com were great to to learn many useful things. I already knew about ehow and howstuffworks.com.
This is a great way to supplement materials we offer here at the library for our members.

Library 2.1

It is great to see how OCLS is well on it's way in becoming Library 2.1. The blogs that we have created by staff . Sharing photos of events on Flickr and videos on You Tube. Having staff and the community share their memories of this area with Orlando Memory.
The open forum of sharing of ideas with the Orange Seed. Great things come from brainstorming ideas with others and since we can't all meet and share ideas in person, Orange Seed is a great use of technology.
Bringing staff and the community together is what Library 2.1 is all about.

SEOmoz's 2008 Web 2.0

I looked a few of the sites and they are a lot of fun! My favorites were Now Public and Bibio.com. Now Public is a site that has the public share with the world wide web about the news they see on their travels and every day life. There are ways to write news stories, download photos, upload from your mobile device or call in to 1-866-225-9530 leave a recorded news story.
Biblio.com is great because it is a search engine for out of print books. This is so helpful when working with patrons who are looking for older books that we don't have or are not on websites like Amazon.
It was also great to see one of our databases for language learning, Mango Languages ranked 2nd on the list of language learning sites.
I'm definitely going to look at more of these sites because it is not only helpful to our customers but also a lot of fun for myself.

Chain, Chain, Change

In my job as a reference clerk at Main many parts of this Mission statement I related to. I help Orange county residents when they visit find what they need in our collection, tell them about the services and databases which introduces them to new ideas, information and technology. I tell them about new innovative services we offer (latest example is OverDrive). I have also been given opportunites to be involved in our community through outreaches and fun programs for families. Everything I do in my job helps create a well-informed, well connected community and encourages learning, working and playing.

Since you joined OCLS, how has technology changed the way you access, use or provide information?
I am in love with Google. It helps me every as a reference clerk. There are some things that customers ask me and I have no idea how to spell them. Especially names and scientific lingo. I type in my guesstimate and lovely Google say did you mean..... Eureka!
Also to access public organizations that assist our customers is very helpful when I am assisting them.

As technology makes information more open source, how do you see our role, as a library, in the future?
More and more people will use the internet to get information and request materials from the library. People are more busy than ever and also the price of gas is expesive and people want to drive the least amount as possible.

Health 2.1

The Wii Fit looks like a lot of fun, but I can see where you may get some odd looks if you were out in public doing this. I love the idea of being able to download motivational music and maybe some motivational words while you are working out. I love to go walking and listen to my MP3 player, I must admit that I mouth along with the words but I don't care what people think. Whatever gets me moving is fine. One thing I need to do is walk faster and get increase my heart rate. Good tips there.

Hey guys,
Nice to blog with you again. We are going to be so Web 2.1 savvy! Very cool.

The next time I will post some photos of my next trip which will be Saturday September 6th to Monday September 8th in Colorado Springs!! On Sunday I will be taking the cog railway up to Pikes Peak which is almost 15,000 feet up. I'm super excited to go on another one of my solo trips!

I'm back..it only took a year. :)
It took me forever, but I finally bought a digital camera. I'm having so much fun with it. Since I bought it I have been able to take pictures of my trips to Silver Springs, Cypress Gardens, Vegas and best of all the magnificent awe-inspiring Grand Canyon (see below).

MP3 great for travelers!

I already have a great MP3 player (see previous post) but I am going to give my Learn 2.0 MP3 player to my lovely Mom. She is a audio book fanatic and she needs to start downloading some books. No tapes and cds to fumble around with on her trips. I know my luggage is lighter having an MP3 player!!

Digital music rights debate (sorry nothing travel related this time)

- Where do stand on the digital rights management debate? I feel that we should be able to copy material we own and be able to give to a friend. Maybe it would encourage them to purchase more cds or downloads from this artist. But I can see how this could get out of hand
Should media be offered with unrestricted rights or pay per use rights? Media should have restricted rights and if the band is popular enough should only be downloaded by paying for it.
Metallica or Napster? Neither, there not my bag baby.
Ipod or Etunes? Down with Ipod, I hate companies that take over a name for an item. Ipod is the Klenex of media players. (Do you want a Klenex? No I want Puffs please! :))
I personally own a Creative Zen vision M and it ROCKS!!

Solo trip to Denver

On 6/4 and 6/5 I went to Denver,CO for the second time. Last time I went to the Denver Zoo which was beautiful and Cherry Creek State Park which was adjacent to my hotel in Aurora. This time I was able to go into the Rockies. I highly recommend the tour company Gray Line tours. They will pick you up from your hotel if you are in downtown Denver or Central Denver. There are different tours, but I took the Denver Mountain Parks tour which is a 4 hour tour ($45) that goes to Dinosaur Ridge, Red Rocks Amplitheater and Lookout Mountain. Our tour guide was Ron King, I think he should have been named Joe King since he always had funny things to say.
It was very beautiful. If you are in Denver if you don't want to rent a car this is a great idea.
I can't wait to go back again. There is a more extensive tour that is 9 hours long and is $99 so next time I go I will probably go on this tour. The Rockies are magical and draw you in. I fell in love with them like many others before me. I definitely recommend this as a vacation destination. These pictures definitely don't do it justice.

Learning online

What started me creating this blog is a great program the Orange County Library System in Orlando,Fl has for its employees called Learn 2.0. I have been really enjoying this as you can tell from previous posts.
It's been great to see how all of us our helping each other out with our assignments, especially how to customize our blogs or understand some of the jargon in the lessons for Web 2.0 lite people like myself. I can see that I am becoming more informed about whats going on in the world of the internet and how we are what makes up the WWW. Especially how we are interconnected through the internet.

My next blog should be some information of my solo trip to Denver,CO with pics!

I was able to find some great Web 2.0 applications for travel:
www.tripadvisor.com - 2nd most popular travel website. Fellow travelers share there travel experiences, tips, pictures and videos. I highly recommend this one.
www.connectedtraveler.com has videos, blogs, podcasts and photos. You can also post classifieds, reviews and create your own page.
www.travelistic.com has many videos for travelers
www.trivop.com is the first video guide for hotels. Travelers and hoteliers can submit their videos.

Some Learn 2.0 applications for the traveler

There are some great sites that I found for the traveler who knows the importance of research. If you use books like I do to do your research there are great ways to keep track of the titles you have used and found very helpful. Some examples are:
Library Thing; Elf; Guru Library; Shelfari
Book Mooch is a great way to trade with other travelers who love to research. If you have been to one destination and have a book you are willing to part with for another book that is good for your next destination, Book Mooch is for you.

Web 2.0

It's so exciting to see how we make up the web and have created many different cyber-communities and ways to share about ourselves.
The videos on YouTube and pages on MySpace were cool . It was great to see OCLS mentioned by our customers and not just staff.

There are obviously many online videos and blogs and vlogs based on TRAVEL. I look forward to looking for some and sharing with you later.

Hello All,
My name is Dawn and welcome to my first blog! I know you are as exciting as am.
As you can tell my passion is travel. I guess it is not a coincidence that my last name is Tripp. :)
Here I will post about past travel experiences and future plans. Also, some tips for solo-traveling which I love to do!!!
I have worked at the Orange County Library System for 8 years and it is a great place to do research for travelling. Frommer and Fodor are my friends! :)
